Tirzepatide in the US: FDA Status, Prices and Supplier Checks

Last reviewed

Tirzepatide is two different things in the US: an FDA-approved prescription drug sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound, and a research compound supplied to laboratories. This guide sets out which is which, what research-grade tirzepatide costs, and how to check any supplier before ordering. To order research material, go to the tirzepatide product page.

The short version

  • Two different products. Mounjaro and Zepbound are FDA-approved tirzepatide, available only on prescription. Research-grade tirzepatide is laboratory material and is not an FDA-approved drug.
  • Price. Eleven strengths, 5 mg to 120 mg, in boxes of 10 vials from $4.50 (£3.42) per vial, every strength priced on the product page. Each box carries a batch-specific COA from Janoshik or Freedom Diagnostic.
  • Not for human use. If you are looking for a medicine, the lawful route in the US is a prescription from a licensed prescriber, filled by a licensed pharmacy. A research supplier is not that.

Guide

What a US buyer should know

Points you can check independently. Nothing here is a claim about what tirzepatide does, or a statement that it is safe or effective for any purpose.

An approved drug and a research compound

Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Its phase 3 trials are published in the New England Journal of Medicine,12 and it is FDA-approved as Mounjaro and Zepbound, both prescription-only. Research-grade tirzepatide is the same molecule supplied as a lyophilized powder for laboratory work. It is not made, tested or released to FDA drug standards, so it is not Mounjaro or Zepbound and is never a substitute for either.

What happened to compounded tirzepatide

During the national shortage, US compounding pharmacies were permitted to make tirzepatide. The FDA declared the shortage resolved in December 2024, and its grace periods for compounders ended in February and March 2025. That changed where US prescriptions are filled. It did not make research-grade material a drug.

What a Certificate of Analysis is worth

Every box ships with a batch-specific COA from Janoshik or Freedom Diagnostic. Batch-specific is the part that matters: a certificate for a different lot tells you nothing about the vial in your hand. Check the batch number on the certificate against the number printed on your box, and check that the laboratory named on it will confirm the report if asked.

What delivery to the US involves

We are a UK company. US orders ship FedEx tracked from our UK stock or direct from our verified manufacturer, depending on availability, and take 5–8 working days from dispatch. Any international parcel can be held, inspected or refused on entry to the US; if a US order is seized, we reship it once per customer at no cost, and a parcel whose tracking stalls is reshipped free. We hold no US stock.

Laboratory research use onlyNobelPepLab supplies tirzepatide strictly for in vitro and laboratory research. We do not provide dosing guidance, do not make health claims, and do not supply products for human or veterinary use. Research-grade tirzepatide is not Mounjaro or Zepbound and is not an FDA-approved drug.

Common questions

Is tirzepatide FDA approved?

Yes, as Mounjaro and Zepbound, prescription-only drugs made by Eli Lilly. Research-grade tirzepatide is a different product and is not an FDA-approved drug.

Is research tirzepatide the same as Zepbound?

It is the same molecule but not the same product. Mounjaro and Zepbound are manufactured, tested and released under FDA approval. Research-grade tirzepatide is a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial, made for laboratory use and verified by a batch Certificate of Analysis rather than by a drug regulator.

Is research tirzepatide legal in the US?

It is laboratory material, not an FDA-approved drug, so there is no lawful route to supply it for human use, and a research-use-only label does not change that. It is supplied here as research material only. Our guide to US peptide law sets out the distinction in full.

How much does tirzepatide cost in the US?

Research-grade tirzepatide starts at $4.50 (£3.42) per vial in a box of ten, billed in US dollars, with all eleven strengths priced per vial and per box on the product page. That is the price of laboratory material. It tells you nothing about the cost of a prescription.

Do you ship tirzepatide to the US?

Yes, to all 50 states, FedEx tracked in 5–8 working days from dispatch. It ships from our UK stock or direct from our verified manufacturer; we have no US warehouse.

What strengths does tirzepatide come in?

Eleven: 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg, 50 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg, 100 mg and 120 mg, each in a box of ten vials.

Mounjaro, Zepbound or research-grade tirzepatide: what is the difference?

Same molecule, different products. The difference is in regulation, form and quality assurance, not in the chemistry.
