How the numbers are worked out

  • Concentration = vial strength ÷ solvent volume. A 10 mg vial in 2 mL gives 5 mg/mL.
  • Volume per draw = amount ÷ concentration.
  • Syringe units = volume in mL × 100. A 100-unit insulin syringe holds 1 mL, so one unit is 0.01 mL. A 50-unit holds 0.5 mL on the same scale. The 1 mL and 3 mL barrels are marked in millilitres instead, because that is what is printed on them. Either way this is a reading on the barrel, not a recommendation.
  • Draws per vial = vial strength ÷ amount per draw, rounded down.
