About Bacteriostatic Water

What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Overview

What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing a bacteriostatic preservative, used to reconstitute lyophilised peptides into solution. The preservative is what separates it from plain sterile water: it inhibits bacterial growth, which is why a reconstituted vial can be drawn from more than once rather than discarded after a single use. Supplied in sealed vials, boxed in tens, for laboratory research use only. This is a consumable rather than a peptide - there is no purity assay to report on it, and none is claimed.

Laboratory research use onlyNobelPepLab supplies Bacteriostatic Water strictly for in vitro and laboratory research. We do not provide dosing guidance, do not make health claims, and do not supply products for human or veterinary use.

These are catalogue specifications. This item is a consumable rather than a research compound: there is no peptide in it to assay, so no purity figure is quoted and no Certificate of Analysis is issued.

Pricing

How much does Bacteriostatic Water cost?

Bacteriostatic Water starts at $0.90 per vial (£0.67), sold in boxes of 10 at $9.00. One box is the smallest order and there is no trade account or minimum spend. Larger volumes are negotiable.

Bacteriostatic Water price by strength. Billed in USD; GBP shown for reference. Each box contains 10 vials.
StrengthPer vialBox of 10
10 mL$1.20 £0.90$12.00 £8.99
3 mL$0.90 £0.67$9.00 £6.74
Important: Sold as a laboratory reagent for research use. This is not bacteriostatic water for injection, which is a licensed medicinal product in the UK and a different regulatory category entirely. No Certificate of Analysis is issued for this item, because there is no peptide in it to assay.
Storage & reconstitution

Handling

How should Bacteriostatic Water be stored and reconstituted?

Sealed vials tolerate ambient temperature in transit and keep at −20 °C beyond that. Reconstitute slowly down the vial wall, swirl rather than shake, then refrigerate at 2–8 °C and aliquot before freezing.

What it is researched for

Research Context

What is Bacteriostatic Water researched for?

Below is a plain-English summary of what published research has investigated, and what it has found. These are descriptions of research activity and published results. They are not claims about what Bacteriostatic Water does, and nothing here is a statement that it is safe or effective for any purpose.

Research status Bacteriostatic water is a solvent rather than a research compound, so there is nothing here to summarise in the way there is for a peptide: no mechanism, no trial history, no approval status of its own. What follows is the practical detail that affects the peptides it is used with.

Why the preservative matters

A lyophilised peptide vial usually holds far more material than a single experiment needs. Reconstituting with plain sterile water means that vial has to be used at once or discarded, because nothing in the solution stops bacterial growth. A bacteriostatic agent inhibits it, which is what allows the same vial to be drawn from repeatedly over a period of days.

Working out how much to add

The solvent volume sets the concentration, and the concentration sets every draw afterwards. Adding 2 mL to a 10 mg vial gives 5 mg per mL; adding 1 mL to the same vial gives 10 mg per mL. Our reconstitution calculator does that arithmetic, and works out the solvent volume for a target concentration.

Storage

Store unopened vials as supplied. Once a peptide has been reconstituted it is the solution that needs care rather than the solvent - kept cold, protected from light, and not repeatedly frozen and thawed. The handling and storage reference covers what a freeze-thaw cycle actually costs.

Read this before citing any of the abovePreclinical means the work was done in cells or animals. Results in those systems very often fail to reproduce in humans. NobelPepLab supplies Bacteriostatic Water for laboratory research only, does not provide dosing guidance, and does not supply products for human or veterinary use.
Laboratory uses

Applications

Where Bacteriostatic Water is used in the laboratory

  • Reconstituting lyophilised peptides for in vitro work, where one vial is drawn from across several sessions rather than all at once
  • Preparing stock solutions at a known concentration, where the vial strength and the solvent volume together fix the mg per mL
  • Diluting an existing stock down to a lower working concentration
  • General bench use wherever a preserved aqueous solvent is called for rather than a single-use sterile one
Questions & answers

Questions

Bacteriostatic Water questions, answered

What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?

The preservative, and nothing else. Sterile water is water and nothing more, intended for a single draw: once the seal is broken it has no defence against contamination. Bacteriostatic water carries an agent that inhibits bacterial growth, so the same vial can be entered repeatedly. That is the whole distinction, and it is why bacteriostatic water is the usual choice for a multi-milligram peptide vial that will be drawn from over days rather than minutes.

How much does Bacteriostatic Water cost?

Bacteriostatic Water starts at $0.90 per vial, sold in boxes of 10 vials at $9.00 per box (about £6.74). 2 strengths available: 10 mL, 3 mL. There is no minimum order.

How is Bacteriostatic Water shipped to the UK and USA?

Tracked to the UK, USA, EU and worldwide, in plain packaging, dispatched within 1–2 working days. Country-by-country estimates are on the shipping page.
