Selective receptor activation
Ipamorelin binds the ghrelin receptor GHS-R1a with unusually little activity elsewhere. Earlier compounds in the same class, GHRP-6 and GHRP-2, raised ACTH and cortisol; ipamorelin did not, even at doses more than 200-fold above those required for GH release. None of the secretagogues tested affected prolactin, LH, FSH or TSH. 1 That selectivity is what makes it a cleaner tool for isolating a single pathway.
Growth hormone pulse research
Because it acts through a different receptor from GHRH analogues, it is used to study how two independent signals combine to shape the natural pulsing pattern of growth hormone release. In human volunteers it produces a single discrete episode of GH release and has a short terminal half-life of around two hours, which is what makes it useful for resolving one pulse at a time. 2
Gastrointestinal motility
Ghrelin receptor agonists influence gut movement, and Ipamorelin was investigated in a clinical trial for post-operative ileus before development stopped.
