Reproductive axis control
Kisspeptin sits at the top of the reproductive hormone cascade. It acts on KISS1R receptors on GnRH neurons, which in turn drive LH and FSH release from the pituitary. Loss-of-function mutations in KISS1R prevent puberty entirely, which is how its importance was discovered. 1
Fertility research
Academic clinical studies have examined kisspeptin as a way to trigger egg maturation with a different risk profile from existing methods. The groundwork is the finding that the response is sexually dimorphic and cycle-dependent: kisspeptin-10 raises gonadotropins in men, and in women during the preovulatory phase, but not in women during the follicular phase. 2 This is among the more advanced human research programmes for any peptide in this catalogue.
Original discovery as metastin
The same gene product was independently identified as a suppressor of cancer metastasis and named metastin. The reproductive role was found later, and both names remain in use in the literature.
