About LL-37

What is LL-37?

Overview

What is LL-37?

LL-37 is the only cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide made in humans. It is cut from a larger protein, hCAP18, and takes its name from its first two residues (two leucines) and its length of 37 residues. Immune cells and the cells lining the skin, gut and airways make it, and it is studied both for killing microbes directly and for signalling to the immune system. Supplied as a lyophilised powder in sealed vials, boxed in tens, for laboratory research use only.

Laboratory research use onlyNobelPepLab supplies LL-37 strictly for in vitro and laboratory research. We do not provide dosing guidance, do not make health claims, and do not supply products for human or veterinary use.

DocumentationBatch-specific third-party COA

These are catalogue target specifications, not batch results. The 99%+ purity figure is the specification we buy to. The authoritative figures for any particular box are the ones printed on that box’s Certificate of Analysis, which is lot-specific. What research grade actually means explains the difference. Terms such as HPLC purity and net peptide content are explained in the peptide glossary.

We make no “third-party verified” claim for a batch unless the matching report is supplied with it. Ask for the current COA for the lot in stock before you order — we will send it.

Storage & reconstitution

Handling

How should LL-37 be stored and reconstituted?

Sealed vials tolerate ambient temperature in transit and keep at −20 °C beyond that. Reconstitute slowly down the vial wall, swirl rather than shake, then refrigerate at 2–8 °C and aliquot before freezing.

What it is researched for

Research Context

What is LL-37 researched for?

Below is a plain-English summary of what published research has investigated, and what it has found. These are descriptions of research activity and published results. They are not claims about what LL-37 does, and nothing here is a statement that it is safe or effective for any purpose.

Research status LL-37 has a large body of laboratory and animal research and some human tissue studies. It is a well-characterised research peptide rather than a clinical-stage drug.

Wound healing research

In human skin, LL-37 rises during normal wound healing and is low in the epithelium of chronic ulcers. Blocking it impaired re-epithelialisation in a human skin wound model kept alive outside the body. 2

Antimicrobial and immune roles

LL-37 acts on bacterial membranes directly and also signals to immune cells, two roles that are studied separately. 1

What is not established

Its activity drops in some conditions, such as high salt or serum, and its effects can be pro- or anti-inflammatory depending on context. Neither question is settled.

Laboratory uses

Applications

Where LL-37 is used in the laboratory

  • Antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi in laboratory assays, including biofilm models
  • Wound and skin research, where LL-37 rises during normal healing
  • Innate immune signalling, since LL-37 also acts as a messenger to immune cells
  • Membrane interaction studies, the mechanism behind its direct antimicrobial action
Batch COA

Verification

Does LL-37 come with a COA?

Yes — every box. Each batch of LL-37 is analysed by an independent third-party laboratory, and the certificate is tied to the batch number on the vial label.
