Gamma-glutamyl tripeptide and the principal intracellular thiol antioxidant

Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and the most abundant thiol antioxidant inside the cell. The bond between glutamate and cysteine is an unusual gamma-linkage through the glutamate side chain rather than the normal peptide backbone, which is what makes it resistant to ordinary peptidases. Supplied as a lyophilised powder in sealed vials, boxed in tens, for laboratory research use only. It is an endogenous compound rather than an investigational one: the research question is rarely what it does, but how its concentration is maintained and what follows when it falls.

DocumentationBatch-specific COA (Janoshik or Freedom Diagnostic)

These are catalogue target specifications, not batch results. The 99%+ purity figure is the specification we buy to. The authoritative figures for any particular box are the ones printed on that box’s Certificate of Analysis, which is lot-specific.

We make no “third-party verified” claim for a batch unless the matching report is supplied with it. Ask for the current COA for the lot in stock before you order — we will send it.

Pricing

How much does Glutathione cost?

Glutathione starts at $6.59 per vial (£5.21), sold in boxes of 10 at $65.85. One box is the smallest order and there is no trade account or minimum spend. Larger volumes are negotiable.

Glutathione price by strength. Billed in USD; GBP shown for reference. Each box contains 10 vials.
StrengthPer vialBox of 10
600 mg$6.59 £5.21$65.85 £52.02
1500 mg$8.01 £6.33$80.14 £63.31
Important: An endogenous compound, supplied as a laboratory reagent for research use. Not for human consumption. Injectable glutathione is marketed in some countries for cosmetic skin lightening; that use is not approved in the UK and is not a use we supply for.

Handling

How should Glutathione be stored and reconstituted?

Sealed vials tolerate ambient temperature in transit and keep at −20 °C beyond that. Reconstitute slowly down the vial wall, swirl rather than shake, then refrigerate at 2–8 °C and aliquot before freezing.

Research Context

What is Glutathione researched for?

Below is a plain-English summary of what published research has investigated, and what it has found. These are descriptions of research activity and published results. They are not claims about what Glutathione does, and nothing here is a statement that it is safe or effective for any purpose.

Research status Glutathione is not an investigational compound. It is present in every cell in the body and has been studied for decades. The literature concerns its role in redox balance, mitochondrial function and detoxification rather than whether it does anything at all.

Redox homeostasis

Glutathione is the principal intracellular thiol buffer, cycling between reduced GSH and the oxidised GSSG dimer. The ratio between the two is the standard measure of cellular oxidative state. The mitochondrial pool is maintained separately from the cytosolic one, and its depletion is studied specifically in relation to mitochondrial dysfunction. 1

Oxidative stress across physiology and disease

Glutathione appears throughout the free-radical and antioxidant literature as both a marker and a mechanism, in normal physiological function as well as in disease models. 2

What is not established

Whether supplementing glutathione raises intracellular concentrations meaningfully is contested, because the tripeptide is broken down and its constituent amino acids reabsorbed. Much of the applied literature addresses precursors such as N-acetylcysteine for exactly that reason.

Applications

Where Glutathione is used in the laboratory

  • Redox homeostasis research, where the ratio of reduced to oxidised glutathione is the standard readout of cellular oxidative state
  • Mitochondrial function studies, since the mitochondrial pool is maintained separately from the cytosolic one
  • Detoxification and conjugation work through the glutathione S-transferase pathway
  • Comparative antioxidant studies alongside NAD+ and the other mitochondrial compounds in this catalogue

Verification

Does Glutathione come with a COA?

Yes — every box. Each batch of Glutathione is analysed by Janoshik Analytical or Freedom Diagnostic, and the certificate is tied to the batch number on the vial label.

Questions

Glutathione questions, answered

Why is glutathione measured as a ratio?

Because the balance matters more than the amount. Glutathione cycles between a reduced form and an oxidised disulfide dimer, and the ratio between them indicates how much oxidative pressure a cell is under. A falling ratio is the standard marker of oxidative stress, which is why the measurement appears across so much of the cell biology literature.

How much does Glutathione cost?

Glutathione starts at $6.59 per vial, sold in boxes of 10 vials at $65.85 per box (about £52.02). 2 strengths available: 600 mg, 1500 mg. There is no minimum order.

How is Glutathione shipped?
